Samuel Hersey

The Civil Rights Act of 1875

(April 12, 1812 — February 3, 1875) Hersey was a teacher, businessman, and politician. Samuel Hersey was born in Oxford County, Maine, and graduated from Hebron Academy in 1831. Hersey served as a member of the State House of Representatives in 1842, 1857, and 1865, and as a member of the State Senate from 1868 to 1869. Additionally, he served on the State Executive Council (1852-1854), and as a delegate to the Republican National Convention (1860). Hersey was elected as a Republican to the United States House of Representatives and served from March 4, 1873 until his death on February 3, 1875.
