The Road to Civil War

(August 23, 1812 — June 17, 1877) Charles Horace Upton, a Representative from Virginia; born in Salem, Mass., August 23, 1812; attended the public schools; was graduated from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, in 1834; moved to Falls Church, Va., in 1836 and engaged in agricultural and literary pursuits; held several local offices; presented credentials as a Unionist Member-elect to the Thirty-seventh Congress under an election held on May 23, 1861, and served until February 27, 1862, when the House declared he was not entitled to the seat; appointed by President Lincoln in 1863 United States consul to Switzerland and served from July 9, 1863, until his death in Geneva, Switzerland, June 17, 1877; interment in the Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
