James G. Blaine

United States Fifteenth Amendment

(31 January, 1830 -- 27 January, 1893) Blaine was an American lawyer and politician. Born in West Brownsville, Washington County, Pa., Blaine studied law in Pennsylvania and moved to Maine in 1854. Blaine was a member of the State house of representatives from 1859 to 1862. Blaine was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-eighth and to the six succeeding Congresses and served from March 4, 1863 to July 10, 1876 and was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Lot M. Morrill, serving from July 10th, 1876 to March 5th, 1881.
