Biography: Lala Achint Ram, born in August 1898 in Amritsar, pursued his early education at the Government High Schools in Amritsar and Simla before attending D.A.V. College in Lahore. In 1925, he married Satyavati Devi, a fellow freedom fighter, rejecting the dowry system and opposing the purdah tradition. From a young age, Ram became involved in India’s struggle for independence, joining the Indian National Congress and participating in major movements like the Civil Disobedience and Quit India Movements. His activism led to multiple imprisonments between 1930 and 1945.
Throughout his life, Ram held several significant administrative roles, serving as a member of the Working Committee and General Secretary of the Punjab Congress, as well as President of the Punjab Harijan Sewak Sangh. He contributed to various social welfare initiatives, including his work as a trustee for the Gulab Devi Tuberculosis Hospital in Lahore until 1930. Additionally, he played key roles in the All India Refugee Association and the Servants of the People Society, advocating for social justice and the upliftment of marginalised communities.
Post-independence, Ram continued his political journey, being elected to the Constituent Assembly from East Punjab in 1946 and later serving in the first and second Lok Sabha from Hisar in Haryana. Alongside Satyavati Devi, he actively participated in Vinoba Bhave's Bhoodan Movement, promoting land redistribution.
