When was a vote taken on Dickinson's amendment?

Commentary

Discrepancies in the sources have made it difficult to identify exactly when a vote was taken on this amendment. Both the Journal and Madison (amending his record using the Journal) record a negative vote towards the end of the session of 24th August; but McHenry writes that the house adjourned before a vote was taken on the proposal, and Madison records a negative vote on that same question the following day, a vote assigned by the Journal to a motion of Roger Sherman's which it is difficult to identify. It seems likely, given this evidence, that the Journal mis-assigned the vote of the following day, and that the negative vote on this motion of Dickinson's was in fact given on the 25th.
