Monday, 15 July 1996

This document contains the statement that was made by Patrick Mayhew in response to the civil disorder from the previous ten days. In the statement, Mayhew commended the Loyalist paramilitary organisations for having preserved the ceasefire and gave thanks to Church leaders for their efforts to reconcile the two communities in Northern Ireland. Mayhew also described the circumstances under which Hugh Annesley, the Chief Constable of the RUC, had to make decisions, and affirmed to the nationalist community that Annesley's decision to let the parade pass had been taken with the Garvaghy Road residents' safety in mind. Finally, he confirmed that the British Government was going to establish a review that would be tasked with making recommendations about the management of future parades.
