This document provides an account of a meeting between James McMullan and Ray Bassett that took place on or before 18 October 1996. McMullan, who was the sole nationalist independent councillor on the Ards Borough Council, spoke about his experience of being a part of a very strongly unionist Council, and the nature of cross-community relations in the Ards area including in the aftermath of Drumcree. He also spoke about some local contoversy involving Portaferry's Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), including the replacement of its previous President with someone who was more sympathetic to nationalists. McMullan also criticised the IFI's activities in Portaferry, as he believed that the IFI money that had been allocated to Portaferry under the Crisp scheme had not been well spent. The document encloses a short note on Portaferry that was written by McMullan.
