This document contains a note from John Holmes to Paddy Teahon, which encloses a letter written by John Major to John Hume on 24 July 1996. In the letter, Major set out Sinn Féin's position regarding a ceasefire as presented to him by Hume in their correspondence from 8 July 1996. Major went on to provide his views on Sinn Féin'a position, and also responded to reports that Sinn Féin wanted a meeting with British officials, which he refused to consider. However, the letter states that Major had attached some words that could be provided to Sinn Féin, if Hume believed that they would make a difference.
