This document provides an account of a meeting between David Donoghue and Alban Maginness that took place over dinner at the Secretariat on 24 October 1996. In the meeting, Maginness provided Donoghue with an assessment of SDLP's chances in North Belfast in light of the ongoing dispute with the local UUP cadre. Maginness said that in light of the two-way or three-way split in the Unionist vote at the upcoming election, and the unlikelihood of both Sinn Féin and the loyalist parties being a threat to the nationalist side, Maginness believed that the SDLP had a good chance of victory in North Belfast.
