This document provides an account of a meeting between the SDLP and the Irish Government that took place on 6 September 1996, in which the SDLP described the meeting they had had with the UUP on 5 September 1996. The SDLP and UUP representatives agreed on the importance of agreement between the two parties, and agreed to develop bilateral contacts with each other. They also discussed decommissioning, and the UUP told the SDLP that they intended to produce a paper on the same. The UUP also complained about the absence of Irish legislation, and the SDLP told them to bring it up with the Government directly. Finally, they discussed how to handle moves to exclude the loyalist parties.
