This document provides a record of the conversations that Seán Ó hUiginn had with John Hume and Seamus Mallon on 17 and 18 July, regarding the meeting that they both had with John Major and Michael Ancram on 17 July 1996. The SDLP members spoke about the recent events in Portadown and the damage that had done to nationalist confidence in the police and in the British Government, and Mallon asked them if they stood by the Framework Document. Hume also told Ó hUiginn that he was planning to speak to representatives of the Apprentice Boys very shortly, and that he was hopeful that an acceptable accommodation could be found with the local residents. The first page of the document contains an annotation dated 18 July 1996, which addresses John Bruton and highlights the importance of giving Hume space with regards to the Apprentice Boys' march.
