Record of a Meeting between Patrick Mayhew and John Hume on 2 December 1993

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

Hume spoke about the upcoming Joint Declaration summit and the prospects of a deal. He outlined what he viewed as the key point of the summit and that he understands the difficulties the British had been having over paragraph 4, having seen the British alternative draft. He thought the idea of joint referenda would be acceptable to the Provisional IRA. Mayhew responded that the British government were serious about ending the violence, but were committed to a constitutional guarantee. They also spoke about a potential leak between the Government and the PIRA.
