request registered at the last Plenary session, he proposed to make a report. This would be in two parts. The first part concerned actions taken by party delegations to confirm their commitment to the principles of democracy and non-violence. He then read into the record the following statement –\n\n\"During the course of the meeting I chaired in the late morning of Wednesday 12 June 1996, the Democratic Unionist Party and subsequently the United Kingdom Unionist Party confirmed their total and absolute commitment specifically to the principles of democracy and non-violence as set out in paragraph 20 of the report of the International Body. This took place in the presence of the delegations representing parties which had already signified their commitment to these principles at a Plenary meeting earlier the same day.\""},{"attributes":{"indent":1},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"underline":true},"insert":"The Chairman"},{"insert":" stated that he accepted these two statements as evidence of the requisite commitment on the party of the parties concerned.\n\n3. \tThe Chairman then announced that the second part of his report concerned the status of the ongoing discussions about rules of procedure. A number of informal meetings had taken place over the past three days, focussing on the written submissions made by various parties and received on 14 June. Considerable progress had been made in the course of discussions, but no final recommendation could be made at present. Further informal meetings would take place.
