Record of a series of meetings between Andrew Hunter and various Northern Irish politicians on 17 and 18 July 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

This document details a series of meetings between British Member of Parliament Andrew Hunter and various Northern Ireland politicians as well as politicians from the Republic of Ireland that took place between the 17 and 18 July 1996. He took note of the widespread anger in Northern Ireland directed at the British Government, who, along with the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary], had lost their credibility in the eyes of Catholic communities. Hunter spoke with David Ervine and Billy Hutchinson of the PUP [Progressive Unionist Party] and David Adams of the UDP [Unionist Democratic Party] in Belfast on 17 July 1996, who stated that the loyalist ceasefire was fragile and that it was important for the talks to make genuine progress in September. Hunter also met with Tanaiste Dick Spring, Seán Donlon and Wally Kirwan from the Department of the Taoiseach, and Dáil Éireann members Bertie Ahern, Desmond O'Malley, Albert Reynolds, and Irish Minister of Social Welfare Proinsias De Rossa on 18 July 1996.
