A memo from John Holmes, Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, to Ken Lindsay, of the Northern Ireland Office, covering the details of one half of the telephone conversation between John Major, British Prime Minister, and John Bruton, Taoiseach, on 31 July 1996. The record covers the first half of telephone call, which discussed the aftermath of the IRA bomb in Manchester, the multi-party negotiations, and the upcoming Apprentice Boys march. In particular, both Major and Bruton were critical of 'the Unionists' not 'allowing progress', mentioning 'inflammatory remarks by Trimble' [David Trimble, Ulster Unionist Party leader].
