Enclosure: Statement by John Bruton on Northern Ireland, 25 July 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

A transcript of a statement made by John Bruton, Taoiseach, to the Dáil on 25 July 1996. Bruton condemned the British Government's handling of the Orange Order march in Dumcree, in particular that it was seen to 'yield' to force and the threat of force. He also condemned the violence which followed it. Bruton noted 'recent encouraging developments' in the multi-party negotiations and encouraged republicans and unionists to 'give the political process a chance'.
