Memo from Alex Allan on a conversation between John Major and Brian Mawhinney about Northern Ireland, 15 July 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

This document contains a memo from Alex Allan to John Holmes [both of whom served as Private Secretaries to John Major] between British Prime Minister John Major and Brian Mawhinney, Chief Whip and Chairman of the Conservative Party, on 15 July 1996. Mawhinney explained that his contacts in Sinn Féin had been speaking to Cahal Daly, the Roman Catholic Primate of All Ireland and Archbishop of Armagh, who had indicated a willingness to meet with Mawhinney if he was in Northern Ireland. Mawhinney proposed that he should visit Northern Ireland and arrange meetings with Cardinal Daly and Robin Eames, the Anglican Primate of All Ireland and the Archbishop of Armagh. The memo contains some annotated text written by John Holmes, in which he confirmed that Mawhinney had made plans to meet with Daly and Eames during his visit to Northern Ireland.
