Irish Government statement on the Garvaghy Road situtation, 11 July 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

This document contains the text of a press release issued by the Irish Government on 11 July 1996, in response to the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary] Chief Constable's decision to allow the Orange Order march to pass through Garvaghy Road. The Irish Government said that this decision ran counter to the British Government's expressed commitment to accord parity of esteem to both communities, and that they had conveyed their concern to the British Government. The statement ended with an emphasis on the Irish Government's commitment to the multi-party talks.
