Enclosure: Record of a telephone conversation between John Holmes and John Alderdice on 12 July 1996

Writing Peace: The National Archives of the UK (TNA)

This document records a phone conversation between John Alderice, head of the Alliance Party, and John Holmes, Prime Minister John Major's Private Secretary. Alderdice expressed concern about the situation in Northern Ireland as it stood after the RUC's [Royal Ulster Constabulary] decision to let the Orange Order march down Garvaghy Road. He said that the reaction following the Drumcree crisis had serious implications for the peace process, as the Nationalists were unwilling to sign up to anything that was remotely acceptable to the Unionists. Holmes said that he tried to explain the operational dilemma that the Chief Constable was under, but that Alderdice was uninterested in the explanation. He (Alderdice) called for the removal of Chief Constable Hugh Annesley, and further requested a meeting with the Prime Minister for the following week.
