UUP position on Mitchell aide allegations

Tuesday, 26 November 1996

i27372

Ken Maginnis, MP, in a communication dated 1 December 1996, addresses allegations involving a Mitchell aide. Maginnis emphasizes that there is no proof to substantiate the rumors that have been circulating for about a month. Both Senator Mitchell and his staff have provided assurances to the contrary. The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leaders are content to leave the matter to the security services, who are already aware of the allegations. Maginnis notes that no security-sensitive information has been disclosed during the talks, which are classified as 'Confidential.' He mentions that John Hume, a delegate in the talks, is known to be in regular contact with Gerry Adams. Senator Mitchell has personally guaranteed that neither he nor his staff have liaised with any member of ''Sinn Féin/ PIRA'' [sic], and thus, he would be the one professionally embarrassed if the rumors were proven true. Maginnis advises caution, warning members to consider their legal positions carefully before commenting, and urges colleagues to be advised accordingly.
