Enclosure: Social and economic development – submission from the UUP

Tuesday, 16 December 1997

i27634

The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) submission to the Confidence Building subcommittee on Economic Issues emphasizes the need for both the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom governments to take specific actions to foster economic stability and confidence. The UUP calls for the Republic of Ireland to act in a neighborly manner to support constitutional and institutional stability. Additionally, the UUP urges the UK government to reject the United Nations Committee's Report on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights from December 1991, particularly its references to combating discrimination, which the UUP claims do not accurately reflect the Northern Ireland employment market. Lastly, the UUP asserts that cross-border economic cooperation should not necessitate the establishment of all-Ireland political institutions.
