UKUP principles upon which it considers the issue of decommissioning to be addressed

Tuesday, 01 October 1996

Robert McCartney QC MP, representing the UK Unionist Party, outlines the party's stringent conditions for Sinn Féin or any party associated with terrorist groups to participate in the Talks Process. The UK Unionist Party demands a complete and permanent ceasefire declaration by Sinn Féin and the PIRA, adherence to the six Mitchell Principles, and a declaration by both governments that Sinn Féin's entry into the talks must be preceded by such a ceasefire. Additionally, the party insists that both governments must enact all necessary legislation and regulations for decommissioning before Sinn Féin can join the talks. The UK Unionist Party also requires that any permanent ceasefire be accompanied by the handing over of a credible amount of weapons and explosives as a sign of good faith. Furthermore, they emphasize that the democratic negotiation process should be independent of the decommissioning process, which should continue to completion regardless of political agreements. The UK Unionist Party urges all pro-Union parties to adopt these principles as the foundation for addressing the issue of decommissioning.
