UUP Talks Bulletin – Northern Ireland Forum for Political Dialogue, 26 September 1997

Friday, 26 September 1997

i27461

The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) expressed strong disapproval of the British Government's (HMG) handling of Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] adherence to the Mitchell Principles, particularly criticizing the government's perceived leniency. The UUP emphasized that Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] failure to commit to these principles, as evidenced by their actions and statements, should result in their exclusion from the negotiations. The party highlighted the importance of consent and decommissioning within the talks, noting that Sinn Féin/ PIRA's [sic] agreement is not necessary to achieve sufficient consensus. The UUP reaffirmed their commitment to defending the Union and ensuring that any outcome maintains Northern Ireland's position within the UK, while remaining vigilant against misinformation and rhetoric from Sinn Féin/ PIRA [sic].
