The Ulster Democratic Party, in their submission dated 17 October 1997, addresses constitutional issues within Strand Two of the negotiations. They argue that Articles 2 and 3 of the Irish Constitution, which lay claim to Northern Ireland, violate principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity as outlined by the United Nations Charter and European law. The UDP asserts that these articles undermine trust and confidence necessary for cooperation between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. They conclude that for meaningful cooperation to occur, the constitutional status of Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom must be recognized, necessitating the removal of Articles 2 and 3.
