Conclusions of the Governments on representations made by the DUP against the PUP and the UDP, enclosing notice and rebuttal

Wednesday, 11 September 1996

i27562

The document outlines the conclusions of the Governments regarding the Democratic Unionist Party's (DUP) formal representations against the Progressive Unionist Party (PUP) and the Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) for allegedly breaching the Mitchell principles. The DUP's allegations included failure to condemn a threat by the Combined Loyalist Military Command (CLMC), endorsement of the threat, and failure to condemn an attack on the Kerr home. After considering the documents, oral statements, and differing views, the Governments noted that the PUP and UDP reaffirmed their commitment to the Mitchell principles and opposed violence. The Governments concluded that the allegations were not substantiated and determined that the PUP and UDP had not demonstrably dishonored the principles of democracy and non-violence, thus no further action was deemed appropriate.
