In a statement dated 16 December 1997, Dermot Nesbitt of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) expressed frustration following a subcommittee meeting on confidence-building measures held on 15 December 1997. Nesbitt criticized the UK Government for its lack of response to the UUP's requests concerning economic issues and the need to combat perceived discrimination against the Unionist community. He argued that the government's inaction undermines confidence in the fairness of Northern Ireland's economy and indicated that such an attitude would hinder any potential settlement in the peace talks. Nesbitt emphasized that the UUP is committed to progress and cooperation but insisted that any acceptable solution must be based on widely agreed principles derived from international standards, a responsibility he believes both the UK and Irish governments are currently neglecting.
