In a press release dated 2 February 1996, Sinn Féin Vice President Pat Doherty commented on the report from the Drafting Committee of the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation. Doherty acknowledged the positive and progressive elements of the report but expressed reservations about sections concerning the measurement of negotiation outcomes and the restriction on national self-determination. He emphasized that these fundamental issues should be addressed in multi-party talks and criticized the ''unionists' veto over change'', arguing that it hinders progress towards a peace settlement. Doherty reiterated Sinn Féin's stance that lasting peace requires the consent and allegiance of both unionists and nationalists to new political structures, and he praised the Forum's role in maintaining focus on the peace process and achieving significant consensus on various issues.
