In an open letter dated 16 September 1997, Ulster Unionist Party Leader David Trimble formally complained to Talks Chairman Senator George Mitchell about Sinn Féin's participation in the multi-party talks. Trimble argued that Sinn Féin had violated their commitment to democracy and non-violence, citing a recent statement in Sinn Féin's official newspaper and a bomb attack in Markethill as evidence.
