In a statement dated 7 October 1997, Minister for Foreign Affairs Ray Burke, TD, announced his resignation from the government and his position as Minister for Foreign Affairs, as well as his seat in Dáil Éireann. Burke emphasized the importance of allowing his office to focus entirely on pressing issues without distractions, particularly during the historic talks concerning the future of Ireland and the challenges faced in Europe. He expressed gratitude to the people of North County Dublin for their loyalty and support over the years, as well as to the public service officials he worked with. Burke maintained his innocence regarding the public controversy surrounding him and expressed his intention to fully cooperate with any investigation, while also highlighting his duty to protect his family.
