UDP response to Governments' discussion document on North/South structures

i28018

The Ulster Democratic Party (UDP) critiques the governments' discussion document on North/South Structures, published on 27 January 1998, as an unrealistic attempt to revive the defunct Frameworks Document. While rejecting the framework proposals due to their deterministic nature and failure to address the totality of relationships, the UDP does not oppose North/South relations in principle. They advocate for cross-border coordination and cooperation if it makes economic sense, is part of broader regional cooperation within the British Isles, and is not imposed on the people of Northern Ireland. The UDP outlines numerous economic and political obstacles to North/South cooperation but suggests that mutual recognition, as employed by the European Union, could be a practical approach for policy coordination in areas such as transport, agriculture, health, and education.
