This document is a statement made on behalf of the Chairmen, by Senator George J Mitchell, on June 10, 1996, at the Castle Buildings in Belfast. Senator Mitchell welcomes the participants to the talks and expresses gratitude for the invitation to participate in historic proceedings and commends the efforts of Prime Ministers Major and Bruton, Secretary of State Mayhew, and Minister for Foreign Affairs Spring, as well as the people of Northern Ireland. The Senator assures that their involvement is solely motivated by a desire to be of help and that they will fulfill their responsibilities in a fair and impartial manner. The success of these proceedings is ultimately dependent on the decisions made by the people of Northern Ireland.
