This document contains a briefing on the Northern Ireland peace process that was prepared by the Congressional Research Services for members of the US Congress. It provides a background summary of the peace process, and describes recent events of significance in detail, including the Hume-Adams talks, the Joint Declaration, the PIRA ceasefire of August 1994, etc. It also details the British and Irish Governments' recent efforts in preperation for the multi-party talks. A separate section has been dedicated to issues which are pertinent for the US Government, including visits of figures such as Gerry Adams, David Trimble and Ian Paisley to the US. The paper also elaborates on US investment in Northern Ireland and the Republic, and on the monetary aid it provides to them via the International Fund for Ireland. It also lists US legislation that pertains to Northern Ireland, and outlines the on-going debate regarding the implementation of the MacBride Principles.
