Provides an account of the meeting that took place between Robin Butler and Dermot Nally on 7 February 1992. Butler informed Nally that the Prime Minister saw no point in continuing talks about a Joint Declaration due to Charles Haughey's imminent departure as Taoiseach, but that if his replacement brought it back up then he would listen. Butler also made several points on the British position on the Joint Declaration, emphasising British caution concerning the utility of the Declaration and its potential success in achieving a ceasefire. They finished by discussing the security situation in Northern Ireland. Highlighted.
