This document records a meeting between Patrick Mayhew, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and Reverend Robin Eames, the Archbishop of Armagh, that took place on 12 July 1996. Mayhew expressed gratitude for Eames' attempts to defuse the Garvaghy Road dispute, while Eames stated his regret that the church leaders' efforts had not resulted in a peaceful resolution. He asked Mayhew to clarify to the public that the church leaders had acted independently of the British Government or the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary]. The two discussed Cardinal Cahal Daly's comments on Drumcree, as well as the claim that David Trimble had done a deal with the RUC on the march down Garvaghy Road.
