This document contains a series of defensive lines for a meeting between John Major, the British Prime Minister, and John Hume, the leader of the SDLP [Social and Democratic Labour Party], on 17 July 1996. It addressed potential charges that the SDLP might have levied against the British Government, including an excessive use of plastic baton rounds against nationalists, and criticism of the decision of the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary] Chief Constable to allow the Orange Order march through Garvaghy road. Other defensive lines were prepared in anticipation of SDLP anger over the lack of involvement of the Secretary of State in the RUC's decisions over Drumcree.
