This document contains a briefing on security issues prepared for British Prime Minister John Major's reference in advance of his meeting with John Hume, leader of the SDLP [Social and Democratic Labour Party], on 17 July 1996. The briefing offered a background to the Drumcree conflict and an overview of the Secretary of State's plans to produce an independent review on the management of controversial marches in the future. The document also touches upon another upcoming contentious march, i.e. the Apprentice Boys parade in Derry/Londonderry, scheduled for 13 August 1996.
