This document records a phone call between Veronica Sutherland, the British Ambassador to Ireland, and Seán Donlon, Chief of Staff in the Irish Government. Sutherland asked Donlon for the Irish Government's reaction to a statement made by Secretary of State Patrick Mayhew the previous day. Donlon reported a mixed reaction, and also mentioned that there had been much appreciation for British Prime Minister John Major's expressed determination to get on with the peace process in his Panorama interview. Donlon spoke about the mood in the Republic, and described the meeting between the Irish Government and the SDLP [Social and Democratic Labour Party] that took place the previous night.
