This document records a memo from Tony Newton, President of the Privy Council, to Patrick Mayhew, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, from 17 July 1996. In the memo, Newton asked Mayhew to update him on any progress that Mayhew had made with the Northern Irish parties, in view of the support that they anticipated from the UUP [Ulster Unionist Party] in the debate on the Queen's Speech later that year. Newton also inquired whether Mayhew had given any further thought to any legislation relating to Northern Ireland that he wanted to bring forward in the next [House of Commons] session.
