This document outlines the press line drafted by the Prime Minister's Office that were to be given following British Prime Minister John Major's meeting with Unionist leaders on 9 July 1996. The document outlined that leaders of the UUP [Ulster Unionist Party], DUP [Democratic Unionist Party] and the UKUP [United Kingdom Unionist Party] attended this meeting to discuss the events at Portadown, and that the meeting had been constructive. The statement also contained an appeal from Major for restraint on the part of everyone in Northern Ireland. Major went on to condemn the recent violence and disorder, and stated that the need of the moment was for local communities to find an accommodation that would resolve the on-going standoff.
