Memo from Veronica Sutherland on further Irish reactions to Drumcree, 12 July 1996

Saturday, 07 December 1996

i31167

This telegram, sent by British Ambassador to Ireland Veronica Sutherland on 12 July 1996, details the various Irish reactions to the events of the Drumcree crisis. She stated that Taoiseach John Bruton had called for an independent commission to review the handling of marches and also criticised the actions of the RUC [Royal Ulster Constabulary], although he also noted that the Chief Constable Hugh Annesley's decision had been taken oon operational rather than political grounds. Sutherland noted that other Irish politicians had also commented on the RUC's handling of events, and Bertie Ahern [leader of Fianna Fáil] even questioned the British Governmet's commitment to the Framework Documents. Ahern also called on the Irish Government to request an immediate IGC [Inter Governmental Conference] and also an emergency session of the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation. She also documented that the Oireachtas Committee for Foreign Affairs had unilaterally condemned the handling of the Orange Order march, and many members of the Irish parliament had called for the resignation of the Northern Ireland Secretary of State and the Chief Constable.
