This document contains a memo for John Major, the British Prime Minister, written by his Private Secretary John Holmes, dated 15 July 1996. Holmes encouraged Major to call with John Hume, the head of the SDLP [ Social and Democratic Labour Party], and John Alderdice, head of the Alliance Party in the upcoming week. Holmes noted Major's earlier comments, that Hume, having withdrawn from the Forum, did not 'deserve' a meeting, but insisted the importance of meeting him anyway, in the light of Major's willingness to meet with Unionist leaders the previous week and the strength of nationalist feeling.
