This document records a meeting between the Irish Government and Sinn Féin leaders that took place on 17 July 1996. Sinn Féin expressed that a deal between themselves and the Apprentice Boys had been emerging before Drumcree, but that the Drumcree incident had complicated this by raising tensions. Sinn Féin further expressed a wish to meet with the Irish Government at a Ministerial level, and called for their inclusion in the peace process. The Irish Government noted that a ceasefire from Sinn Féin would enable the Governments to fulfil both their requests for a meeting with the Irish and for inclusion in the peace process. Sinn Féin stated that they were working on a ceasefire, but also said that that was not feasible at the minute. The two sides agreed to meet more regularly.
