Record of an opening plenary meeting on 17 September 1997 at 18.12 (OIC/PS82)

Writing Peace: George J. Mitchell Collection

This is the draft summary record of a plenary meeting on 17 September 1997 at 18.12. The British Government withdrew the statement but kept 24 September 1997 as the proposed date for the procedural motion to be tabled. Alliance said if they only saw the document on 24 September 1997 they would not be able to vote on it then. Sinn Féin objected to the UUP's involvement in the process despite their absence from plenary. The Chairman asked for participants' views on whether the DUP was still entitled to copies of plenary minutes. The SDLP thought not, as per rule 43. Sinn Féin didn't think the indictment should be debated in plenary but were overruled by precedent. Labour wanted it debated immediately. The indictment was scheduled for Tuesday 23 September 1997.
