Writing Peace: George J. Mitchell Collection

Tony Blair's statement on Northern Ireland, delivered to Parliament on 25 June 1997. The statement restates the principles of the government's approach to the problem and emphasises the desire to make rapid progress on a settlement centring on devolved government and cross-border arrangements. It condemns recent PIRA terrorism and explains an aide-mémoire that was passed to Sinn Féin by the government on 13 June 1997.It also announces a joint government line on decommissioning, including the creation of two subcommittes. There is a handwritten annotation in the top left-hand corner which reads 'as delivered', and two amendments made to the speech in pen.
