Opening statement by the UUP delegation for strand 2 talks, 7 October 1997

Writing Peace: George J. Mitchell Collection

This document contains the text of the opening statement made by the UUP delegation on the launch of Strand 2. UUP reaffirmed its commitment to the union and emphasized the importance of respecting the consent principle, particularly on the part of Sinn Féin/IRA, nationalists and the Irish Government. It called for the replacement of the Anglo-Irish Agreement with a new agreement which would have regard for the totality of relationships within the British Isles. UUP proposed a 'Council of the British Isles' as a body that would allow the UK and the Republic of Ireland to cooperate on matters of common concern.
