Writing Peace: George J. Mitchell Collection

This document, submitted by Sinn Féin on 24th March 1998, is a discussion paper concerning the peace talks in Northern Ireland. The party emphasises its commitment to a democratic peace settlement and denies any exit strategy. Sinn Féin outlines its vision for a 32-county republic, although it acknowledges that this objective is not likely to be achieved by May [1998]. The party stresses the need for an agreement that transcends partition and makes a difference to people's daily lives. Sinn Féin calls for an alliance of Irish political parties and the Irish Government to pursue the interests of the Irish nation and normalise relationships within Ireland and between Ireland and Britain. The document also highlights the erosion of confidence in the talks process among nationalists and republicans due to various developments, including unionism's refusal to engage, loyalist killings, and the expulsion of Sinn Féin. Sinn Féin proposes that any agreement must ensure include powerful all-Ireland bodies, constitutional changes, equality, and demilitarisation. The party views any agreement as part of a transitional process towards Irish unity and independence.
