Writing Peace: George J. Mitchell Collection

This document is a summary record of a plenary meeting. The main focus of the session was Sinn Féin's possible expulsion from the talks due to recent PIRA violence. The session began with the Chairman outlining the proposed agenda, which included initial remarks from the two governments, a response from Sinn Féin, and a general discussion. However, Sinn Féin requested an adjournment to seek legal advice, expressing frustration at the delays and the focus on their removal from the negotiations. Sinn Fein mentioned the possibility of taking legal action at different stages, including during the proceedings or if they were ejected from the talks. Sinn Fein requested a reasonable adjournment to receive a second legal opinion and make a political judgment. The Chairman proposed an adjournment of 35 minutes to allow for consultation with all participants and the two governments. The session adjourned at 1424, with the Chairman seeking a balance between fairness to Sinn Fein and the need to proceed with the plenary session.
