David Trimble, leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), provides a briefing note dated 12 June 1996, detailing the progress of negotiations at Castle Buildings. The note is intended for internal use by Forum delegates and constituency offices to keep them informed about the ongoing discussions. Trimble outlines the unified stance taken by the UUP, the DUP and the UKUP against the procedural guidelines released on 6 June 1996, which they found unacceptable due to the extensive powers granted to the Chairman. The UUP proposed adopting the procedural guidelines from the 1992 Talks, which were previously acceptable to all parties involved, but this compromise was rejected by the Nationalists. Despite initial resistance, the UUP engaged in discussions with the Irish Government and secured significant concessions, although Dr Paisley and Mr McCartney later criticized the agreement. Trimble emphasizes that the UUP has maintained its principles and that Senator Mitchell will chair a procedural meeting to agree on an agenda, starting with a 'blank sheet.'
