Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

Gerry Adams, President of Sinn Féin, wrote to David Trimble of the Ulster Unionist Party on 28 January 1998, requesting a bilateral meeting between their parties. Adams referenced a request made by Sinn Féin's Chief Negotiator, Martin McGuinness, during a Strand Two meeting and acknowledged the difficulties Trimble's party might have with such a meeting, as articulated by Reg Empey. Empey's previous day's contribution was noted as generous by Adams. Emphasizing the serious situation in Northern Ireland and the democratic need for dialogue, Adams formally and respectfully urged for the meeting to occur promptly.
