UUP Talks Bulletin – multi-party talks, 10 September 1996

Writing Peace: David Trimble Collection

On 10 September 1996, the participants spent three hours in Plenary discussing the DUP's 'Notice of Indictment' against the PUP and UDP, focusing on their commitment to the Mitchell Principles amidst threats from the Combined Loyalist Military Command (CLMC). The PUP and UDP presented a joint paper to rebut the charges and reaffirmed their opposition to violence. The UUP acknowledged the PUP/UDP's relationship with the CLMC and urged them to explicitly oppose the threats, noting that while the threats might not breach the Mitchell Principles directly, they contravened their spirit. Additionally, the Women's Coalition lodged a complaint against UUP member John Hunter, and the Alliance maintained their intention to lodge a complaint against the UUP and DUP, while the UUP delegation engaged in bilateral meetings with the Alliance and SDLP.
